This probiotic blackberry, blueberry, and kefir smoothie makes the whole body happy — gut, brain, and taste buds included!

Berries are some of the most nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich foods on the planet, and I make a point of eating them almost every day.

The flavonoids and other powerful phytochemicals found in berries have been shown to combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. As a result, berry consumption is believed to help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cognitive decline. Berries are also low in calories and high in fibre, making them a great choice for healthy weight control.

Kefir is a fermented probiotic drink made from dairy or non-dairy milk. It has a yogurt-like taste and lots of immune-boosting and disease-fighting benefits. Kefir contains bioactive compounds that can improve gut and skin health, and may help to reduce the risk of cancer and allergy symptoms. One compound found only in kefir, known as kefiran, has been found to fight against candida, a common yeast infection.

For 1 large (or 2 snack-sized) servings, blend together until smooth:

  • 3/4 cup fresh blackberries

  • 3/4 cup frozen blueberries

  • 1 cup kefir (dairy or coconut, see note below*)

  • 1/2 frozen banana (or 1/2 to 1 cup steamed-then-frozen cauliflower for a low-carb option)

  • 1 to 2 tbsp chia seeds (optional)

  • 20g vanilla protein powder or substitute part Further Food collagen (code “DRTARA” for discount) (optional; see nutrition information below)

  • sugar-free monk fruit sweetener, pure stevia, raw honey, or sweetener of choice, adjusted to taste (optional)

  • optional toppings: bee pollen, granola, or toppings of choice

*Note: If you’re not a fan of or don’t have access to kefir, you can substitute plain probiotic Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Add unsweetened almond milk or milk of choice as needed for desired consistency.

Nutrition information for 1 large serving (using 1 cup cauliflower, 1 tbsp chia and 20g of protein powder): this smoothie provides approximately 390 calories, 30 grams of protein, and 15-16 g of fibre. If the protein powder is increased to 1 full scoop (~30g powder with 25g protein), the smoothie provides about 430 calories and 40g of protein. This nourishing combination is especially supportive in menopause, offering balanced energy, muscle and bone support, and nutrients that promote gut and hormone health.
