Lean & Green is a delightfully refreshing "detox" drink.  I first served it to my son as a hydrating pre-dinner snack after a hardcore tennis lesson.  He thought it was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up!

This shake gets some of its vibrant green colour as well as a nutritional boost from chlorella powder (optional).  Chlorella is so nutrient-dense that it has been ranked as one of the top 10 healthiest foods in the world.

Native to Taiwan and Japan, chlorella is a freshwater blue-green algae that is rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants.

The phytochemicals in this powerful superfood are believed to help boost energy and metabolism, detoxify the body of heavy metals, support the immune system, and promote oral, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular health.  As with other natural supplements, chlorella can have side effects, so it is helpful to discuss with your nutritionist or health care provider if considering regular use.

For 2 servings, blend together until smooth:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond or nut-free milk (I like to use my Almond Cow to make homemade plant-based milk)

  • 1 to 2 handfuls romaine lettuce

  • 1 to 2 handfuls diced English cucumber

  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks

  • 1 to 2 stalks of celery, diced (including leaves if desired)

  • 1/2 apple, cored and diced

  • 1/4 to 1 tsp chlorella powder (optional, adjusted to taste)

  • optional Lakanto monkfruit sweetener, pure stevia, or raw honey (nonvegan), adjusted to taste

If serving as a meal replacement or substantial snack, I recommend adding healthy fats and protein.  Good options here include 1/2 ripe avocado PLUS 2 Tbsp Nuzest Clean Lean natural or vanilla protein powder OR Further Food collagen peptides (nonvegan) OR 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (nonvegan).

For a "mint-chip" twist, add 1/4 tsp pure peppermint extract and top with or pulse-blend in raw cacao nibs at the end.
