Treat your body right with this superfood-boosted Medjool date and protein smoothie. It can power you for hours as a tasty and satisfying breakfast, or help you to recover from an intense workout if you are a fitness junkie like me!
Our bodies are the most amazing machines and we need to fuel them properly before, during and after exercise. This smoothie is great following an intense workout. With some added protein and superfoods like maca (see below) and turmeric (an amazing natural anti-inflammatory), your body, mind and soul will get the re-charge they need.
Dates are easy to digest and make a great energy booster with their natural sugars. They are rich in dietary fibre and antioxidants, as well as several essential minerals including iron and magnesium.
Maca root powder has a slightly earthy, butterscotch taste and is a wonderful herbal "adaptogen". This means it helps the body to lower cortisol levels and deal with stress. Consumption may help to relieve anxiety while also boosting energy, concentration, stamina and even libido. Here I have used gelatinized maca since it is easier to digest.
For one serving, blend together until smooth:
- 1 cup cashew nut milk
- 2 to 3 pitted Medjool dates
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1/2 to 1 scoop unflavoured protein powder of choice*
- 1/2 to 1 scoop collagen powder* (optional)
- 1 Tbsp cashew nut butter (optional)
- 1 tsp gelatinized maca powder
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 to 1/4 tsp ground turmeric
- pinch of both ground cinnamon and cardamom
*Notes: This smoothie gets natural sweetness from the dates and banana. However, pure maple syrup, stevia or agave may be added as desired. I used 1 Tbsp (1/2 scoop) of Bulletproof upgraded collagen and 1/2 scoop of Genuine Health unsweetened unflavoured fermented vegan protein powder.
