This satisfying chocolatey shake gets its name from the two key ingredients -- cacao and leafy green Swiss chard!
Swiss chard is a member of the beet family. It is mild, slightly salty tasting, and super nutrient dense: For only 35 calories in one cup of diced raw greens, you get loads of vitamins like K, A & C; minerals including magnesium & potassium; dietary fibre; and health-promoting phytonutrients!
Swiss chard contains over 30 different antioxidants with potent anti-inflammatory and disease-fighting benefits. In addition, one of its flavonoids, syringic acid, has been found to help with blood sugar regulation.
Cacao is the purest form of chocolate we can consume. It is free of all the unhealthy sugar and other additives found in most processed chocolate. And it is a nutritional powerhouse!
Raw cacao is unbelievably rich in antioxidants and minerals including iron and magnesium. As a bonus, the vitamin C from the orange helps our bodies absorb that plant-based iron. Furthermore, cacao is a great source of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, making it a natural mood enhancer.
For 2 servings, blend together until smooth:
- 2 cups unsweetened cashew milk
- 2 large handfuls chopped Swiss chard leaves
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 Tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tsp maca powder
- pure stevia or maple syrup to sweeten as desired
- raw cacao nibs to garnish (optional)
*Notes: This base recipe makes a great snack with energy-boosting and detoxifying benefits. For a more substantial 'real meal deal', add:
- 2 Tbsp cashew nut butter
- 1 scoop unflavoured protein powder (here I used Genuine Health fermented vegan protein)
